Chaityabhoomi is a sacred site located in the Dadar neighborhood of Mumbai, India. It is an important pilgrimage site for followers of Buddhism, as it is believed to be the site where Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, a social reformer and architect of the Indian Constitution, was cremated after his death in 1956.
Dr. Ambedkar was a prominent advocate for the rights of India’s Dalit community, who were traditionally regarded as “untouchables” in Indian society. He converted to Buddhism in 1956, along with thousands of his followers, in order to escape the discrimination and prejudice he faced as a member of the Dalit community.
Chaityabhoomi is home to a large memorial to Dr. Ambedkar, which was built in the years following his death. The memorial features a large statue of Dr. Ambedkar, as well as several other statues and a museum dedicated to his life and work.
The site is visited by thousands of people every year, particularly on December 6th, which is the anniversary of Dr. Ambedkar’s death. The day is marked by prayer services, processions, and other events to honor his memory and legacy.
