During his political journey, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar selected the Elephant (🐘) as the election symbol for his party, the All India Scheduled Castes Federation (SCF).
This symbol was chosen with deep thought and powerful meaning.
🔹 Reason for Choosing the Elephant
Dr. Ambedkar believed that the elephant represents intelligence, patience, strength, and stability.
In his historic speech at Jalandhar on 27 October 1951, he stated that the elephant is a symbol well-known across India and that our people possess the same strength and dignity as the elephant.
🔹 Historical Significance
The elephant was not merely an election symbol. It also held constitutional importance—
the Elephant was accepted as the official emblem used during sessions of the Constituent Assembly of India, symbolizing strength, wisdom, and responsibility in nation-building.
🔹 Earlier Political Symbol
Before SCF, during the 1937 elections, Dr. Ambedkar’s Independent Labour Party (ILP) used the “Human Being” as its election symbol, reflecting the core philosophy of human dignity, equality, and social justice.
🔹 Legacy
Every symbol chosen by Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar carried a profound message—
a message of self-respect, collective strength, and empowerment of the oppressed.
