Satyashodhak Samaj: Jyotiba Phule’s Vision for Social Justice

On 24th September 1873, a revolutionary step was taken in Pune, Maharashtra, with the founding of the Satyashodhak Samaj (Truth-seekers’ Society) by the visionary social reformer Jyotiba Phule. This society was not just an organization—it was a movement aimed at challenging social inequality and uplifting marginalized communities.

The core mission of the Satyashodhak Samaj was to promote:

  • Education for all, especially the underprivileged

  • Social rights and political access for marginalized groups

  • Empowerment of women, Shudras, and Dalits in Maharashtra

Jyotiba Phule’s pioneering efforts were complemented by his wife, Savitribai Phule, who served as the head of the women’s section of the society. Together, they worked tirelessly to break the barriers of caste, gender, and social hierarchy, laying the foundation for a more equitable society.

The Satyashodhak Samaj remains a symbol of courage, vision, and reform, inspiring generations to continue the fight for social justice and equality in India.
