Types of Vipassana Courses Explained

Overview of Vipassana Courses in the Tradition of Sayagyi U Ba Khin, as taught by S.N. Goenka

Vipassana, which means ‘insight’ in the ancient Pali language, is an ancient technique of meditation rediscovered by the Buddha 2,500 years ago. Today, it is taught worldwide through residential courses. Here is a guide to the different types of courses available:

1. The 10-Day Course (The Foundation)

This is the standard introductory course required for anyone wanting to learn Vipassana in this tradition. Over ten days, participants follow a strict code of discipline (Sila), remain in complete silence (Anapana), and learn the technique itself. It is a mental ‘surgery’ designed to cleanse the mind.

2. Old Students Courses

Once you have successfully completed one 10-Day course, you are considered an “Old Student” and gain access to different types of retreats:

  • 10-Day Special Courses: Deepen your practice of the 10-day technique.
  • Vipassana Long Courses: (20, 30, 45, or 60 days) for very serious students who have practiced regularly and completed several 10-day courses and met other criteria.
  • Teachers’s Self Course: Specific courses for those who have been authorized to teach or assist in teaching Vipassana.
  • 1-Day/3-Day Old Student Courses: Shorter retreats for old students to refresh their practice.

3. Specialized Courses for Teens & Children

  • Children’s Courses: (Often 1 or 2 days) Introduce Anapana (mindfulness of breath) to children, usually ages 8-12, helping them improve concentration and emotional management.
  • Teenagers’ Courses (7 Day Vipassana Course): Specific retreats tailored for teenagers (often ages 13-18) introducing them to Anapana and aspects of Vipassana. These are designed to help them navigate the challenges of adolescence.

All courses are conducted on a donation basis.
