B. R. Ambedkar, one of India’s greatest social reformers and the architect of the Constitution, shared a deep and meaningful connection with Solapur. His visits to the city were not merely political events, but powerful moments that inspired social awakening and unity among the oppressed sections of society.
First Visit and Early Recognition (1932)
Before his major political engagements in Solapur, Babasaheb briefly visited Solapur railway station in March 1932. During this visit, he was honoured with a certificate, reflecting the growing respect and admiration people had for his leadership and vision.
Around the same time, with his inspiration, a backward class hostel was established in Solapur in 1932. This initiative became a symbol of empowerment, providing educational opportunities to underprivileged students. Babasaheb later visited this hostel twice, showing his continued commitment to education and social upliftment.
First Historic Assembly in Solapur (1937)
Babasaheb’s first major and impactful visit to Solapur took place on 24 March 1937 during the campaign of the Independent Labour Party. He had come to support Labour Party candidate Jivappa Adale.
A historic public meeting was held at Bhimnagar in Mandrup, where Babasaheb addressed a large gathering. His speech ignited awareness among workers and marginalized communities, encouraging them to fight for their rights and dignity. This event remains a landmark moment in Solapur’s social and political history.
Visit During National Leadership (1946)
On 14 January 1946, Babasaheb visited Solapur once again, even while serving as a minister in the Viceroy’s Executive Council. Despite his national responsibilities, he remained deeply connected to the people of Solapur and continued to engage with their struggles and aspirations.
Asthi Kalash: A Sacred Memorial
Even today, Solapur preserves the sacred memory of Babasaheb through his Asthi Kalash, which is kept at Asthivihar Prenabhoomi. This place has become a site of श्रद्धा (reverence) and inspiration for thousands of followers who visit to pay their respects.
A Lasting Impact
Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s association with Solapur reflects his lifelong dedication to social justice, education, and equality. His visits strengthened the Ambedkarite movement in the region and left behind a legacy that continues to guide generations.
Solapur stands today not just as a city he visited, but as a living testimony to his mission of building an equal and just society.
